The Italian tenor Carlo Vutera has impressed audiences in Europe and America with his communicative gifts, passionate delivery and expressive voice.
Born in in Brussels to Sicilian parents, Carlo studied music theory at Mannes, and began his career singing with the New York Lyric Theatre, specializing in character tenor roles such as Frantz, Gaston,Goro, Cassio,Remendado, Beppe, and many other walk in parts. His career blossomed in Cuba, where he thrived artistically as a respected soloist at the National Opera House of Havana. His roles included Alfredo in “La Traviata,” Pinkerton in “Madame Butterfly,” Don José in “Carmen,” Cavaradossi in “Tosca,” and Arturo in “Lucia di Lammermoor.” While living in Cuba in the late 1990s, he also frequently collaborated with the pianist and coach Pura Ortiz in a series of well-received recitals on the island.
Carlo’s passion for Italian and Cuban music inspired a collaboration in 2005 with prominent Cuban musicians such as the jazz pianist Roberto Carcassés, the percussionist Dafnis Prieto, the saxophonist Yosvany Terry , the bassist Yunior Terry and the singer Descemer Bueno. The resulting album, called “Ammore: Boleri Napoletani,” features a selection of Neapolitan love songs arranged as Cuban boleros and has been added to the prestigious RAI music archive in Italy. The album has been featured in a number of major media outlets, including ABC’s The Mix.
After taking a hiatus from the stage to run a successful, multi-genre music venue in New York showcasing notable international musicians, Carlo has returned to his first love: opera. Based in New York, he continues to refine his voice with the guidance of the baritone John Fiorito, a former mainstay of the Metropolitan Opera.
Carlo, who counts Franco Corelli, Cesare Valletti and Renata Tebaldi among his mentors, has been the recipient of several awards, including grants from the Singers Foundation Development and Lombard Odier. A fluent speaker of English, French, Spanish and Italian, Carlo feels a particular affinity with bel canto and verismo repertory.
Following his successful European tour in the summer of 2012, with performances in Italy, France and Spain, Carlo’s fall 2013 season includes a performance at the National Opera Center of New York and recitals in Europe, followed by a Concert in Paris in October , Venice in November and Brussels in December , and a Solo rectal in India in January 2014 .
